Something has shifted. You can feel it if you stand still long enough. A change in the air. A tug toward the outer edge where the ground is uneven but alive. At our recent gathering of the fx Leadership Community and Board, it became obvious that many of us had been sensing the same thing. The edges are waking up again.
We spent time walking the landscape together, noticing the fragile shoots, the stubborn roots and the places where new life might be trying to break through. We asked honest questions. We shared what is working and what is not. We paid attention. And something became clear.
Fresh Expressions has always lived in the ecotone, the living boundary where the well-trodden paths of the Church meet the wilder places of emerging mission. It is a place of tension and possibility. It is where communities grow quietly before anyone has language for them. It is where faith takes on local soil and refuses to be boxed in.
Over the past few years we have spent a lot of time helping the Church describe that growth. Naming the journey. Gathering stories. Creating tools. All of that work matters. But as we listened together, we realised the Spirit is tugging us back into the centre of the ecotone again. Back into the clearing between the centre and the edge. Back into the place where questions are allowed to breathe.
Questions like:
What kind of church is needed in this cultural moment?
How do ordinary Christians root faith in the places they actually live, not just in inherited structures?
How do we build community that can survive the polarised climate we are living in?
What might God be germinating quietly on the margins while everyone is looking somewhere else?
These questions are pulling us toward a new clarity. So is the strapline that now sits at the heart of our work.
FX Creating Brave Spaces of Community, Conversation and Church.
Brave spaces are not polite committee rooms. They are messy, honest, generous rooms where people bring their doubts, their imagination, their hope, their weariness and their wild ideas. Clergy. Pioneers. Misfits. Wanderers. Everyday Christians who care deeply about their neighbours and cannot ignore the pull of the Spirit. Brave spaces hold truth without fear and creativity without permission slips.
Several themes emerged from our time together.
Brave spaces.
Repositioning fx in the living middle.
Growing contextual mission by paying attention to the soil under our feet.
Staying with the margins because that is where new shoots appear first.
It feels hopeful, because renewal is already sprouting in ordinary places and through ordinary people. It also feels real, because none of this work is fast or tidy. It takes imagination. It takes patience. It takes a community that believes the edges matter and that God has not finished with the landscape.
This is the shift we are making. We are choosing the edge again. The honest questions. The creative tension. The raw soil where faith can root itself in ways that make sense to local lives. And if you have never connected with fx before, this is a very good time.
If something in this stirs you.
If you feel that tug toward the borderlands.
If you sense God moving somewhere quiet and unpolished.
Come closer.
We are creating brave spaces all over the place.
There is room here for you.
