I have over 30 years of experience leading pioneering, community focused and systems change work across the church, voluntary and community sectors. From 2015 to 2025 I was Director of the Northern Mission Centre for the Diocese of Carlisle, where I supported the launch of more than 120 new community based initiatives across Cumbria, grew Network Youth Church to engage over 5,000 young people a month, led the £3.3 million Reaching Deeper project and wrote the Planting and Pioneering sub strategy that helped secure £6.8 million of investment. Before that I grew StreetSpace into a nationally significant pioneer youth initiative with Frontier Youth Trust, and was Chief Executive of The Worth Foundation. I developed and delivered the Certificate in Pioneer Mission and have taught youth and community work, missiology and systems approaches at Durham, Gloucester, Oxford, Cambridge and Brunel universities. I have published four books, including Here Be Dragons and Pioneering Youth Work, and developed frameworks such as the Mixed Ecology Trellis, Speed Incubator for Communities and Tricksters Theory of Change. I founded Alchemy At The Edge in 2025 and currently provide partnerships and development leadership for Fresh Expressions UK.
