On the Road: Getting Ready for York

  • Post category:Story

On Saturday the Anglican branch of the Fresh Expressions family comes together in York for their annual gathering “On the Road.” The day is coming together and is likely to be packed, illuminating and providing plenty that enables all of us to go back home a little more equipped for the task of re-imagining Church.

John Day told Fresh Expressions that the name ‘One the Road’ came from Archbishop Sentamu, the Archbishop of York.  “Jesus was not in the Temples or the Synagogues” John told us “but on the road, talking with people, spreading the good news etc. We need to be the same.”

Several hundred people are expected on the day.  The programme will be hosted by a number of churches in York and will feature a track for those new to Fresh Expressions, 1-1 consultations as well as times gathered together. The day will begin with an address by Archbishop John Sentamu who is excited about the day ahead.  He told the Diocese of York website:

“I am looking forward to participating in this year’s Anglican Fresh Expressions Conference. During 2017 and 2018 I am undertaking weekend missions within each deanery in the York Diocese, encouraging all to share the love of Jesus Christ with those they meet. As a church we need to reach out to where people are, enabling them to find and explore the love that God has for them and the new life in Christ this brings.”

During the day they’ll be a host of seminars going on including these nuggets:

  • Canon Richard White from Liverpool Cathedral talking about the Joshua Centre and its plans to launch 30 new congregations by 2022.
  • Phil Togwell from Prayer Spaces in Schools which enables “children and young people, of all faiths and none, to explore faith, spirituality and life’s big questions in a safe, creative and interactive way.”
  • Andy Milne answering the question of ‘How to start a fresh expression.’
  • Ian Mobsby and Graham Cray exploring Fresh Expressions of Church in Catholic settings.

Tickets are still available and can be obtained through the Diocese of York Eventbrite website
