Asylum Fellowship is a Christian community in the heart of London’s alternative scene. Among punks, metalheads, and skeptics, Asylum creates space for open conversations about faith in an environment where many feel out of place in traditional churches.
Founded in the early 90s, it began when a group of Christian punks kept getting asked the same question: “How can you be a Christian and still be part of this scene?” Instead of defending their faith individually, they formed a fellowship where people could explore Christianity without judgment. Meeting first in a record shop, then in a heavy metal pub, Asylum has always been about meeting people where they are.
At its core, Asylum is built on conversation and shared experience. There’s no pressure to conform—just a commitment to exploring faith together. Many who come have felt disillusioned with church, while others are seekers drawn to the welcoming space. Some attend both Asylum and a traditional church, while for others, Asylum is their primary Christian community.
Over the years, the community has adapted. Pre-Covid, they hosted club nights featuring Christian rock music that blended seamlessly into the scene. The pandemic forced them online, which unexpectedly expanded their reach internationally. Now, Asylum continues both online and in-person, meeting monthly in a metal-themed restaurant.
Asylum challenges the idea that Christian communities must fit a specific mold. While some might see the alternative scene as dark, those within it see people who are open, searching, and willing to ask real questions. The goal isn’t to get people into a church building—it’s to help them draw closer to God in a way that makes sense to them.
